English: Washington Navy Yard (Feb. 6, 2003) -- “The War of 1812, A Documentary History,” edited by Michael Crawford, has just published the third volume of the Naval Historical Center’s (NHC) projected four volume set of period documents chronicling the War of 1812. An ongoing project for the NHC since 1985, these volumes blend historic documentation from the participants with synthesizing essays written by the Center’s Early History Branch historians. Arising from issues concerning neutral rights and the impressments of American seaman, this war with Great Britain extended from 1812 to 1815. Naval duty at that time ranged the spectrum from an American frigate attempting a daring escape from a blockaded harbor in a foreign port, to two fleets battling it out in a lake, and even to a motley crew of American barges taking on the British Navy in a creek.
